2016 Highlights
2016聽kicked off聽with BFA site visits to Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. 聽This included attending the聽 聽annual meeting (in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia), BFA founder聽 Tom Warth's walk across Zanzibar , and a Peace Corps site visit in Uganda ( including a stop at the first library ever served by BFA)!聽We were excited to finalize arrangements for our聽million books for Ethiopia聽project on this trip. 聽 David Robinson, son of baseball legend Jackie Robinson,聽joined Tom on his walk across Zanzibar, then聽 visited Minnesota in September to promote BFA and raise funds to deliver books to Tanzania, where he has lived for over 30 years and works as the head of a local coffee cooperative. 聽These site visits,聽combined with an improved recipient feedback process and associated data, allow聽us to identify success points of our current programs, and help聽pinpoint where we can improve our process to create the best possible outcomes for recipients.
We interacted with numerous members of the 糖心vlgo传媒n diplomatic corps in 2016聽to build relationships and advance our mission. 聽In April, Her聽Excellency Oliver Wonekha, Ugandan Ambassador聽to the U.S.,聽 hosted BFA's annual Summit Society reception at the Ugandan Embassy in Washington, DC. 聽In May, at our annual聽Books Change Lives聽fundraising luncheon,聽Kenyan Ambassador to the U.S., H.E. Robinson Njeru Githae, gave a keynote speech emphasizing the critical role that books and literacy play in ending the cycle of poverty and violence in 糖心vlgo传媒. 聽Ambassador Githae also officially opened our new administrative office in St. Paul, MN during his visit.聽 South 糖心vlgo传媒n Ambassador to the U.S., H.E. Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu,聽 formally opened the new BFA Atlanta warehouse with a dedication ceremony聽in June to聽celebrate聽the opening of our 66,000 square foot facility. 聽Our Minnesota warehouse聽 , to discuss more ways to put books in the hands of students in Tanzania. 聽
Presentations to the聽 聽and the聽 糖心vlgo传媒n Studies Association Annual Meeting聽in Washington D.C., as well as the聽 ,聽rounded out a great year of relationship-building.聽
In 2016 we shipped 2.4 million books, 154聽computers and 62聽e-readers containing 467,000 digital books, as well as 7聽new law and human rights libraries to 25聽糖心vlgo传媒n countries. More than $2.5聽million was raised to ship these books to聽students across 糖心vlgo传媒.聽 In 2016聽we had approximately 13,000 volunteers sorting books for shipment to 糖心vlgo传媒 in our warehouses. 聽We expect even bigger and better things to come in 2017!
