Soma Safari, a Book Ecosystem Project of the iSchool, Ships 50,000 Books to Kenya

The 鈥淪oma Safari鈥 initiative, led by the San Jos茅 State University School of Information, is a global literacy project aimed at expanding access to books and educational resources in underserved communities. Working with local partners, the program helps establish small libraries and distribute thousands of books to children鈥攑articularly in regions where access to reading materials is limited. A major focus highlighted in the article is its work in Kenya, where efforts have supported early childhood literacy by delivering large-scale book donations and creating sustainable reading opportunities.

Beyond its impact on communities, Soma Safari also provides hands-on learning experiences for graduate students. Through fundraising, logistics, and international collaboration, students gain practical skills while contributing to meaningful social change. The initiative reflects the iSchool鈥檚 mission to connect academic study with real-world application, demonstrating how information science can be used to promote literacy and expand educational access worldwide.
